The part that usually fails
On a casement window it is almost always the friction stay. It is the hinged arm at the side or top that lets the window open and then holds it against wind, and it does that thousands of times.
When it wears, the symptom looks like a window problem: the sash drops, or it will not stay where you put it, or it fouls the frame on closing. The window is fine. The stay has gone, and a stay is a part rather than a replacement window.
Identifying what you need
Window hardware is rarely branded and almost impossible to describe over the phone. The fastest route is a photo of the part still in place, plus one measurement: the length of the stay, or the centres between the fixing screws on a handle.
