Their popularity has grown over recent decades on convenience, appearance, energy efficiency and versatility. Most manufacturers produce standard hinged models; several now produce custom-hinged products that let one panel be removed completely or left in place while the other opens. That sounds counter-intuitive for a door, and it is genuinely useful: it gives far more flexibility on a wide glass opening, letting two spaces connect with open space in between.
Manual, not automatic

The two are often confused because both are hinged. The difference is a motor and a controller, and about an order of magnitude in price.

A glass swing leaf is heavy, and everything about how it feels in daily use comes down to the hinge. A floor spring set into the slab carries the heaviest leaves and controls the closing action. Hydraulic patch hinges mount on the door edge and suit lighter panels, and they are faster to fit because no slab work is involved.
